| | I thought it was less than jake, wasn't sure though. This is an amazing song. Possibly my favorite against me song. The whole disco album is a lot different from their other stuff. |

agreed!
as for the lyrics, it reminds me of a romeo & juliet situation. i'm almost sure someone has already mentioned this, but i won't bother to check. |

| | Wow... I really never thought about the Romeo and Juliet thing... I always thought it was about a gay relationship, and that it was condemning people who make gays feel ashamed of being who they are. But the Romeo and Juliet definitely fits as well. |

| I interpret this song different than it's probably supposed to be, but I guess that's alright. It reminds me of my relationship with my parents, and the two people in the 'relationship' in the song I see as myself. Sometimes I feel like I have to be a different person around my parents, they dont understand anything different than the typical 'American' lifestyle. They gasp at tattoos, homosexuals, etc. and it makes me really sad. So I feel like I have to censor a lot of the things I do and say around them to the point where I'm not even really being myself. Sometimes I just want to scream and stop hiding tattoos from them, and tell them how different I feel about certain things but I know it would hurt them. I love the line 'We’ll keep this, keep us like a secret, because if my family and friends ever found out about the things we could never be, haunts we’ll always keep, so fucking bittersweet.' Because if I could describe in one word how it would feel to be myself around my parents, it would definitely be bittersweet. I know they would love me for who I am, but I'm sure they would be extremely disappointed that I'm not the good, church-going daughter they wanted. Part of me is like wow, just grow some balls and be yourself, you know? But I really hate making my parents sad.
I just listened to this song a couple times, that's what inspired this novel. It makes me sad ..but in kind of a good way, if that's possible? At least it makes me think. _________________ so whats the use of going outside it's so depressing when people die in real life |

| | I think I know what you mean. It can be hard to be yourself around your parents when yourself is just quite different from them. When I moved outfrom home years ago thigs in a way got even weirder. They have always just seen this tiny part of me. I did hide some things and some just were never asked or talked about. That's probably quite normal. I always felt loved, and I always loved them. We just did not seem to understand each other. But you know, maybe we (as children in general) might just not be fair for not giving them the chance to prove us wrong when we think they don't understand. My mom just died, and I can't help asking myself if it really was such a good idea to keep everything to myself, even if I mostly did it not to worry her. I now have a lot of things on my mind that have been left unspoken, and it does not feel too great. I now try and be more open with my dad, I'm just so not used to it. It's hard. But it just might be worth it.. |

| diso is probably one of the best recordings AM has ever made!
to me, the whole disco EP is about toms divorse and i think this song fits it in so many ways. He's talking about not being accepted as a couple. maybe toms friends never accepted his wife? or something. or perhaps its about his first realtionship after his first wife, how its "fucking bittersweet". also tom pointed out the connection between disco, ocea and searching... and in searching there is the reference to womens clothes and ocean talks about being a women, so perhaps disco does have a gay meaning about lesbians? |

That is a very interesting point made. I agree for the most part -
on a side note, this song is one of the best AM! songs, in my opinion, and has so much depth to it. I think what makes this song so great, as with many other AM! songs, is that there is not one meaning to it or one interpretation, yeah maybe Tom was going for a particular idea when he was putting shit together, but to the fans and over time that idea might change - and because it's so deep it can be interpreted, appreciated, and what not in so many different ways. It's even plausible that now what the lyrics meant way back when it was first written mean something and stand for something different now to Tom and crew. I know that whenever I listen to this song, I draw so many parallels with the lyrics to my own life, and I love it. I'm sure a lot of you do the same. |
