| Christ we were dying in the streets running one last anthem through your heart. Swearing life on liberty I'll take a dream an ideal die sound in a lonely death. Pass this compromise on...... My regrets to Columbus (GA) and nothing more when Reagan became the final word. Just one month later they shot Lennon dead, will anybody cry for me? All nations claim until they day that I die, I am citizen. We'll let music rule our life, celebrate shortcomings. If it's not angry young and beautiful, I don't want any part of it. Who do you have to cheat to get what you want, who do you lie to, to get what you need? You deserve everything you got coming to you...
I've seen a bunch of people on the internet praising this song, calling it "beautiful poetry" and other things, and though I do think it's great, there are some things I just don't understand about it. Anyone want to give a nice analysis of it? |

| I believe he's talking about the beauty of being young and wrestless. Yea we're not perfect and life isn't perfect but there's a certain almost unnoticed beauty in the mistakes we make. That we have to take everything for what it is and realize that no matter what this is OUR life our one chance to live and we're gonna fuck up and have hard times but damnit we'll enjoy every second of laughter and every second of pain....we'll enjoy just knowing that we're alive. Feeling the life course through our veins from whether it be joy or sorrow... _________________ "Bound together by our mutual distaste for everything else"

God damn man, that made my day brighter.. Even though it's 10PM and I'm only going to get an hour of sleep before work..

Wow. That's beautiful...
But, there are still a few confusing lines, specifically:
My regrets to Columbus (GA) and nothing more when Reagan became the final word. Just one month later they shot Lennon dead, will anybody cry for me? All nations claim until they day that I die, I am citizen.
They don't really seem to fit with what you said. |

That, I think, is about how a person's value is related to their ability to pay taxes. He's saying that the nation mourns rich men and entertainers because the money will keep coming long after they are dead. But the "I" singing this song, well, they won't be a source of income, will they? So who would bother mourning them if they have nothing to offer after they pass on?
I'm actually in love with this idea. I can see history texts being re-written as economics texts and containing basically the same story. _________________ If you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down / I've been too honest with myself I should have lied like everybody else |

I can't help much with deeper meaning. But taken literally the lyrics give a few clues. John Lennon was killed in December of 1980. A month before that Reagan won the presidency. With Reagan came unapologetic support, (e.g. guns, training, money) for various right wing dictatorships and revolutionary forces in Central America. In places like Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador people were literally dying in the streets at the hands of soldiers who received their training in Columbus, Georgia at The School of the Americas. | | This is definitely one of their most beautiful songs. In my mind, it's the only reason for wanting a cleaned up version of the Self Titled 12" EP |
