i know i'm new here --- but I just wanted to say ---
I think the whole album uses the metaphor of someone dying from some sort of STD (most likely AIDS) and correlates it to both politics and the state of the band.
Throughout the album, (listen to it through from Miami up to Searching for a Former Clarity - the last song), Tom sings about how a disease is bringing him down and tearing him apart. The first, Miami, talks about how scummy and corrupt Miami is (political references like "ballots floating in the ocean"), which is where he may have first contracted AIDS and signed onto a major contract.
I could write a whole damn blog about this --- but the last song, "Searching for a former clarity" is Tom using the metaphor of dying from AIDS as a way of showing his little, underground punk rock band dying (essentially because he knew they were making the major label move).
"Let this be the end. let this be the last song. let all be forgiven" -- he knew his fans were going to turn on him once he made the inevitable signing to a major (SIRE), he was asking for forgiveness. |

| COCAINE.... the whole SFAFC cd is about his drug use and how it took control of him. i dont want to explain it right now its midnight but ill come back to this and explain
EDIT!: Hokay soooo the whole cd isnt about his drug abuse, some of it is signing to a major yadda yadda yadda but the other side is about his drug abuse... Violence, How Low straight up tells you he is dealing with his drug abuse.

theres more to it but i cant find where tom or fat mike or maybe even someone else from the band explains it but ya thats the basics, and sorry for saying the whole cd. But a good portion of it does if i can find the interview or whatever it was ill post it but they explain a lot of the shit.

lemme know dude, you set it up for suspense.
i believe the entire album is a concept album and ties a message of the political happenings in america, the politics of the band signing to a major label, and there downward spiral all with a metaphor dealing with sex
i don't think they've ever came out and admitted that there was a story behind the album though (it's somewhat apparent that the majority of the songs connect)

| I do think that the LP gets the concept across a bit better. I forget exactly how it's divided up, but each side seems to be a different act in the story.
My question is whether or not it was SUPPOSED to be a concept album, or did it just work out that the songs, when lined up as they were, became a long narrative?

Oh, I understand. It's a ten year conversation, that is. I was just not sure if it was a band or something. Or maybe you weren't aware of what it was. And as much as I don't like the IRA (I'm an Irish American too, but I've never been to Ireland, and my family hopped on a boat and left because it sucked, so I suppose I'm just an American, really), I really, really don't like people who wear a symbol they don't understand.
For example - all those dumb kids with Che Guevara shirts and purses and pins. I really, really hate that trend.

| I never thought that my heritage defined me very much. I'm very American that way, I suppose, in that I have no real connections to anything, past, present, or future. The few sad attempts at celebrating my heritage (Irish and Native America, mostly, though I've a healthy bit of French in me as well, my family name was originally Dereazeaux, or something really long and hard to spell like that, it became Deriso in the 18th century when they got off the boat) have mostly just left me sort of embarassed. I really have no culture, and I don't particularly care about anyone else's culture, I think culture is just an extension of nationalism, and nationalism is something that I would consider one of the truly great evils in the world. Love of country and culture have led to some remarkably evil things.
I'm not a big fan of Che. He's an interesting historical figure, and I have read some books about him/by him, but I'd never wear his face. Buy a Socialist Party t-shirt instead. Or a bag that says "support Democratic Socialism" or something.
